I don’t expect you to sit around dreaming up all the different words and phrases your prospects might be looking for. There are easier ways to get that information.

We begin with some broad terms and then use these tools to help us find more:

  Yahoo’s search statistics. This will still help you with Google but gives you mainly competitive terms with high competition (and cost).

  Another free keyword research tool which will give you basic keyword ideas.

  Google’s sandbox. It will give you keyword ideas but no search stats.
• http://www.goodkeywords.com/ This uses Overture data but it’s a free piece of software you can download and install on your computer.

Keyword Matching Types

Google uses several matching types to figure out if the keywords you listed in your account should or shouldn’t trigger a particular user’s search string.

For example if you bid on the keyword

mlm

Should Google match these queries:

• MLM training
  
• mlm scam
  
• mlm laws
• how to reject a mlm rep

What if you bid on this string:

mlm training

Do you want your ad on lead generation training showing up for these queries:

• MLM health product training
  
• distributor mlm training

Google will decide to show your ad or not show it depending on the keyword matching options you use. You can tell it how particular to be about matching your keywords.

Here are the matching types:

With negative keywords, you can ask Google to make an exception for strings that contain that keyword. Even if the search string the user looks for matches.
